How often should pets get a veterinary exam?

If your pet is an otherwise healthy adult, with no known medical conditions, we recommend they undergo an exam at least once per year. Senior pets usually need two exams per year. While pets with ongoing medical conditions or treatments may need more frequent visits. Kittens and puppies will also need to see their vet team more, especially when they are getting their initial round of vaccinations. (These usually require multiple visits over the span of a few months, although they are for booster injections, and not necessarily full exams.)

What happens during a veterinary exam?

You and your pet will have a private consultation with their veterinarian. The doctor will do a tip-to-tail visual exam on your pet to check for any signs of concern. Their breathing, sight, hearing, mobility, weight and other vital signs will also be analyzed. Then, you and the doctor will have a discussion about your pet’s current health status. It is a perfect opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your pet. If the doctor notices anything unusual, further tests may be ordered.
